Riptide News · NOTES FROM THE AD – August 3, 2020

HELLO RIPTIDE SCHOLARS, FAMILIES, AND FRIENDS!

As a means to provide athletic updates, give shout-outs, feature accomplishments, or distribute pertinent information, I’m beginning a weekly feature entitled “NOTES FROM THE AD.”  With summer winding down and the fall sports season fast approaching, I’d like to share our new staff hires within Riptide Athletics.

Welcome to the newest members of our Riptide Athletics family

Chris Bolus will serve as an Assistant Football Coach and JV Boys Basketball Coach.  A recent graduate of The College of Charleston, he will also be teaching Science to high school scholars at CCSMS.  Coach Bolus grew up in the Charleston area and has a keen understanding of local high school sports, having coached last year at James Island Charter High School.  We also say congratulations, as Coach Bolus was newly married earlier this summer!

Chad Bond will serve as our Head Coach for Girls and Boys Cross-Country.  An assistant coach last season with Riptide Cross-Country, he assisted in the development, growth, and mentoring of a young squad.  An avid ultra-distance runner himself, Coach Bond’s running philosophy of “slaying the dragon” will no doubt bring out the very best in every Riptide runner!

Kailen Boston will serve as the Defensive Coordinator for Riptide Football.  Coach Boston is a former NCAA D-II student-athlete at Concordia University-St. Paul (MN.), having played linebacker and defensive back with Golden Bears Football.  He currently teaches elementary Physical Education and serves as Athletic Director at the Meeting Street Academy.  His passion and high-energy, as a teacher and coach, will serve to better our football scholar-athletes!

Lisa Cates will serve as our Associate Head Coach for Girls and Boys Swimming.  A sixth grade teacher in our middle school at CCSMS, she has also coached in local swim clubs throughout the Charleston area.  A former competitive swimmer herself, Coach Cates is eager to assist in the growth and development of Riptide Swimming from 2020 and beyond!

Andrea Masters will serve as our Head Girls Basketball Coach and as Assistant Volleyball Coach.  She comes to us from Timberland High School and will be teaching Health at CCSMS.  A former NCAA D-I student-athlete at South Dakota State University, where she competed in track and field, Coach Masters also provides a wealth of knowledge with strength and conditioning, speed development, and training athletes for their optimal performance level.

Andrew Smith will serve as our Assistant Head Coach for Girls and Boys Swimming.  Another CCSMS veteran, as he teaches within our Exceptional Scholars Department, Coach Smith provides experience in swimming instruction, training and conditioning, and development of a swimmer’s peak performance.  Although new to Riptide Swimming, he has been an involved club coach for his daughter, as she competed throughout the local area.

Rick Sonnycalf  will serve as the Offensive and Defensive Line Coach for Riptide Football.  No stranger to our school, Coach Sonnycalf is the husband of Deb Sonnycalf, CCSMS high school teacher.  He brings a formidable background within the game of football, having played Offensive Line at The Ohio State University, under legendary coach, Woody Hayes.  A full-time employee of Boeing Aeronautics in Charleston, he also provides experience in youth ministry and adolescent counseling.

And a welcome back to an important member of our Riptide Athletics staff …

Lakyn Traquair will serve as our Assistant Athletic Director-Middle School A.D., as well as Head Softball Coach.  Even though Coach Traquair is not new to CCSMS or Riptide Athletics, she has become an invaluable asset to me, as I’ve transitioned into my new role as Athletic Director.  Her experience, expertise, and leadership provide a GREAT illustration for the strong teamwork we are building among all sports programs throughout CCSMS.  I’m excited to work alongside her to make our scholar-athlete’s experience at CCSMS … GREAT!

In the coming weeks, I will outline the new vision for Riptide Athletics, our mission statement and expectations, while providing the philosophy for building, developing, and growing our BE GREAT! culture.  In the meantime, for timely updates with everything Riptide Athletics, you can catch us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.  Just search CCSMS Athletics!

2020-2021 is upon us – more to follow … GO RIPTIDE – BE GREAT!
